The province of Ontario passed legislation (0. Reg. 391/21: BLUE BOX) to make Producers of packaging and paper products for recyclable materials 100% responsible for end-of-life recycling costs. Starting January 1, 2026, the Producers take full control of the residential blue box collection in the City of Brantford and the County of Brant. Properties zoned as Commercial and Institutional, which include Not-for-Profit Organizations, Municipal Buildings, Daycares or Places of Worship and Businesses within BIAs will no longer receive curbside collection of Blue Box recyclable materials.
The Chamber recognizes that this change will lead to increased costs and logistical challenges for affected organizations, many of whom are unaware of the impending transition and unprepared to secure private waste management services.
