City of Brantford’s Statement
The campaign was launched as a response to local businesses after developing reports of break-ins, copper wire theft and property destruction. The series of crimes have resulted in major financial loss, increases in insurance premiums and arising safety concerns for employees of these local businesses. While the City passed a by-law in 2024 which was meant to strengthen local regulation by banning cash payments and requiring traceable payments, it has be noticeable that municipal attempts themselves are not enough to discourage organized theft operations
In August 2025, The City council of Brantford passed a motion from the Ward 4 Councillor Linda Hunt that directed staff to initiate an advocacy campaign advising the Government of Ontario to execute a consistent province-wide scrap metal statue and calling out the Government of Canada to update the Criminal Code and reform the bail system to better protect local businesses and communities from repeated offenders.
